Why this is your job, not theirs

In Queensland it is an offence to carry out building work valued at more than $3,330 without a QBCC licence. Licensees must show their name and licence number in all advertising, including social media.

And the QBCC is blunt about who has to check. Its own page for homeowners says: “it is your responsibility to check that the person is licensed to do the work”, and adds — about the handyperson who cannot produce one — “if they can't show you their licence, show them the door”.

The penalties fall on the contractor, not on you: up to 250 penalty units ($33,362.50) for a first offence of unlicensed building work, rising to $46,707.50 or a year's imprisonment for a third. But the unfinished bathroom is yours.

The number alone is not the answer

A QBCC licence authorises named classes of work and nothing else. Someone licensed for carpentry is not licensed to do your plumbing. That distinction is the single most useful thing in this register, and it is exactly what a licence number on a quote does not tell you — 38.8% of licences carry more than one class, and the rest carry exactly one.

So this site answers three things: does the licence exist, which classes does it cover, and where is the holder based.

Getting work done in Queensland?

A licence tells you someone is allowed to do a class of work. It does not tell you they are available, or that they will quote. Tell us what the job is and roughly where, and we will put the requirement in front of licensed contractors for that class. We are not a broker, we hold no prices, and we take no booking — and we will never suggest someone who is not on the register for the work you need.

We read every message ourselves. Your email is used to reply and to pass the job on, and nothing else — see the privacy page.
